LMA CELEBRATES NEW MEETING LOCATION

WOW!!!  WHAT A GREAT MEETING!

Even though the attendance was lower than we expected, the meeting got under way with focus and enthusiasm as old members and new guests trickled in to the "new" LMA meeting site at the Public Library South Regional Branch Building in Lafayette. With many issues to cover, and new information to bring to the table, much was accomplished, much confusion was put to rest, and many sweets were consumed thanks to the generosity of those who brought morning snacks.

LMA is proud to announce the installation of our new Treasurer, Jara Ahrabi (consumer and member of the Louisiana Midwifery Advisory Board / LA State Board of Medical Examiners.
After a visit to the "Big Push" Summit in Alabama, Ahrabi, and midwives; Anne Lastrapes and Sherri Daigle returned with valuable info regarding the status of the movement and how LMA could increase awareness about the legalities of midwifery practice both state and nationwide.

Midwife, Kathy Acree spoke passionately about the MAMA Campaign, and included LMA history as a reminder of the struggles our state organization has faced, witnessing changes to the law that recognize and issue licenses to midwives in Louisiana. Consumer, Amy Shamburger voiced her concerns about the accessibility of quality midwifery education for young women seeking the process of future licensing; while midwives Emmy Trammel and Lynette Robinson outlined the requirements of education necessary for those seeking a midwifery career.

All midwives present encouraged a MEAC accredited school as the route to those seeking direct entry into the profession with some attention placed on a science background to support their traditional midwifery skills.

Cheryl Hasten, RN and prospective midwifery student was introduced by midwife, Lynette Robinson as her new birth assistant. Cheryl shared with the group her heart felt desire to become a midwife and how she chose nursing school as one route along her midwifery education path. Cheryl has hopes of becoming a LM/CPM one day.

While much more was covered in the four hour meeting that finally broke for lunch at 1:10 pm, of primary importance is the development of a membership drive. Suggestions to begin a Natural Childbirth Film & Discussion Series free to the Public and sponsored by the LMA at the Library's 100 seat media center was considered; and those wishing to be a part of this informational membership drive committee, please contact Jara at:  jara@ahrabi.com

There was a total of 15 people present at this meeting.  Next meeting, lets triple the number!!!!
